\"OlympicThe number of people in permanent jobs has fallen for the second\u00a0month as the summer lull was affected by economic uncertainty\u00a0and the distraction of the London Olympics.<\/p>\n

The Labour market has been like a rollercoaster ride over the past\u00a0year, with the number of unemployed falling between March and\u00a0May despite the economy being in recession.<\/p>\n

“The UK’s labour market deserves a gold medal for its incredible\u00a0performance in the face of adversity so far this year,” said Kevin\u00a0Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment\u00a0Confederation, which represents recruitment agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The REC’s index measuring the change in the number of permanent\u00a0staff placements compared with a month ago came in at 47.3 last\u00a0month from 46.8 in June, with readings below 50 indicating decline.<\/p>\n

London saw the steepest fall in recruitment, and there were reports\u00a0that some companies had decided to postpone recruitment until\u00a0after the Olympics due to the number of people being preoccupied\u00a0by this event.<\/p>\n

Bernard Brown, head of business services at accountants KPMG\u00a0said it was likely that the “Olympic effect” was combining with the\u00a0traditionally quiet summer period for job hunters.<\/p>\n

Research carried out by Recruitment Consultants Badenoch & Clark\u00a0say that 1 in 6 employees will consider throwing a “sickie\u201d during the\u00a0Olympic Games. The figure increases to 1 in 4 amongst 16 to 34 year\u00a0olds.<\/p>\n
